California, March 3, 2022: Legacy Foundations has recently set a new company record on the I-405 Freeway Improvements design-build, drilling a 12-foot-diameter, 201-foot-deep CIDH shaft with a cage weighing more than 365,000 pounds. A two-pump pour allowed Legacy to place 767 CY of concrete while extracting temporary sectional casing and transferring the rebar cage load from crane, to oscillator, back to crane. It was the heaviest cage that Legacy has spliced and held during a pour, done only in 10 hours with no anomalies. The effort required months of planning and coordination between Legacy’s equipment department, superintendents, and the contractor’s project team.
Legacy Foundations is a subcontractor to OC 405 Partners JV on the $1.2 billion project, extending 16 miles from California State Route 73 to Interstate 605. The project is broken up into three segments and will add one new toll express lane and one general purpose lane in each direction as well as improve the freeway. Legacy has been on the project since November 2019. Their work scope involves installing 26-inch-diameter CIDH piles for 18 sound walls, 8-foot-diameter CIDH piles for the Heil Pedestrian Bridge, 9.5-foot-diameter CIDH piles at the Newland OC, and, most recently, 12-foot-diameter CIDH piles at the 405-73 HOV Connector Separator.
One significant project challenge has been performing drilling efforts within extremely close proximity of one of the busiest freeways in the nation. The team is currently working on the 405-73 HOV Connector, an incredibly busy freeway with significant MOT conflicts. The team has only 60 feet between drilling work and live traffic, protected by crash trucks and barricades, and yet their dedication to safety shows. Legacy Foundations has had zero safety incidents with more than 60,000 man-hours to date.
Currently, the team is working around the clock to meet the demobilization date of early June 2022.
